Affordability of homes

Forty per cent of young people cannot afford to buy a house, even if they have a 10% deposit, it was reported on 8 October 2018.

House prices have risen by 173% over the last 20 years, but average pay fr those aged 25 to 34 has risen by just 19%.

In 1996, 93% of those with a deposit who could borrow 4½ times their salary could buy a home. That figure fell to 61% in 2016.

Over the same period, rental costs have risen from £140 a week to £200. [18.10]
