Japan introduces departure tax

In January 2019, Japan introduced a departure tax of 1000 yen (£7.20) when visitors leave the country. It is called a sayonara tax.

It is expected to yield 50 billion yen in 2019.

There are exceptions for:

  • children under the age of two
  • those leaving on a ticket issued before 7 January 2019
  • crew members
  • those who have been in Japan for less than 24 hours
  • anyone forced to return to Japan for bad weather or other unavoidable circumstances. [19.01]
