Coronavirus and bank branches

Many banks were reported to be closing branches on 24 March 2020, even though banks are exempt from the general closure of shops.

TSB has closed about one fifth of its branches. Lloyds and Halifax also report closing many branches.

Even when branches do open, their hours are often restricted. Nationwide has reduced its hours to 10am to 2pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 12 noon on Saturdays.

Inside banks, social distancing is being enforced.

Many people can obtain money from cash dispensers or Post Offices, though shops prefer payment by card to avoid a risk of infection from notes and coins.

The Bank of England has said that the UK banking system is secure. [20.03]
